GAME 9

MEN

AUSTRALIA vs SRI LANKA

The first time these two teams have met since the tour on which Sri Lanka took a Test win from Australia. A lot depends on the mental approach of both teams--confidence on the part of Sri Lanka, a niggling doubt on the part of Australia? We think the Australians will adopt a very positive approach, but the mind-games could make this a fascinating game.

Bowling and fielding superbly, Sri Lanka put the first two pair under such pressure that Australia were only 23 runs after 8 overs, by far their worst start to a game this tournament. However, the Australian batsmen rallied, adding 81 for the last 8 overs.

The first Sri Lankan pair have just completed their partnership, taking the skin and a valuable bonus point from the Australians.

The second Sri Lankan pair have just come off the court with 32 runs to their credit. That's 2 skins to Sri Lanka, and 56 runs to get from 8 overs to win.

Australia lifted considerably for the 3rd Sri Lankan pair, restricting them to just -4. The last pair now need 60 to win. It's almost certainly going to be an Australian win, but for the first innings and a half the result was definitely in the balance . . .

Australia finished the game off by restricting the last Sri Lankan pair to 13.

The Sri Lankans gave the Australians a number of serious frights during this game, especially the performance of the first two Australian batting pairs and the excellent rally by the second Sri Lankan pair. In the end though the Australians' experience and no-panic approach carried them to a comprehensive victory, although they may rue the 2 skins (2 points) they lost.
